For more than six decades, the English Chamber Orchestra has stood among the world’s leading chamber orchestras, carrying British musical excellence from London to audiences around the world. Renowned for the precision, versatility and energetic virtuosity of its performances, the ECO has built an exceptional legacy through international concerts, landmark recordings and collaborations with many of the most distinguished artists of our time.

Under the long-standing patronage of His Majesty King Charles III, we honour a distinguished cultural heritage while continually asking what classical music can mean today—whom it can reach, what it can awaken and what future it can help create.

We perform in concert halls and on international stages, record for albums and screen, and collaborate with soloists, composers, conductors, promoters, producers, venues and cultural institutions. Yet our purpose extends far beyond performance. As a charitable organisation, we believe artistic excellence carries a wider responsibility: to widen access, nurture talent and ensure that classical music remains a living, shared experience.

Through Close Encounters and its flagship initiative, Lights, Camera, Score, children and young people create original stories, music and films alongside professional musicians, educators and award-winning creatives. For many, it is a first encounter with a live orchestra; for others, it becomes a new way to express ideas, build confidence and discover that classical music belongs to them.

Our commitment to the next generation extends from first encounter to first professional opportunity. We are developing new pathways for emerging conductors, composers, performers and artistic leaders through mentoring, commissions, competitions and opportunities to create and perform alongside the Orchestra.

We are also strengthening the voice of our musicians through musician-led advisory groups and committees, ensuring that the people who bring the ECO’s music to life help shape its artistic development, programmes, partnerships and future.

What We Do

We create music that moves people—and a legacy that reaches far beyond performance.

The English Chamber Orchestra creates and performs exceptional music across the United Kingdom, throughout Europe and around the world. Our work encompasses public concerts, festivals and international tours; private, corporate and ceremonial performances; recordings for film, television, video games, albums and digital media; and bespoke collaborations across music, culture, entertainment, education and business.

Our work is not confined to one format, one setting or one kind of audience. We bring together the right musicians, repertoire and creative expertise for each brief—responding with the flexibility of a chamber orchestra and the artistic authority of an internationally recognised institution.

Through Close Encounters, children and communities encounter and create music with professional musicians. Through the emerging pathways we are building, young conductors, composers, performers and artistic leaders will be able to develop their craft, gain professional experience and contribute new voices to the future of chamber music.

Our artistic and charitable activities form one connected ecosystem. Earned income from performances, recordings and commissions, together with donations, patronage, sponsorship and institutional support, helps sustain exceptional musicianship, create new work, widen access and invest in future generations.

Why It Matters

A score can endure on paper. A legacy lives only when it is shared.

Classical music carries centuries of human experience—love and loss, courage and conflict, celebration, faith, beauty and hope. Behind every work is a human story. Every time it is performed, that story meets a new moment, a new place and a new listener.

A score may be preserved in an archive, but it becomes a living inheritance only when musicians give it breath and people are invited to make it their own.
