English Chamber Orchestra

Under the long-standing patronage of His Majesty King Charles III

Royal Patronage

A distinguished relationship between the Crown, British musical excellence, and the cultural life of the nation.

The English Chamber Orchestra is deeply honoured by the long-standing patronage of His Majesty King Charles III, whose association with the Orchestra reflects a distinguished relationship between the Crown, British musical excellence, and the cultural life of the nation.

His Majesty’s support for the arts has formed an important part of his public life over many decades. The Royal Family’s official website describes The King as an experienced watercolourist, a keen collector, and Patron of the Arts, with his support extending across art, music, and theatre through his role as Patron or President of cultural organisations.

This lifelong interest in the arts sits within a wider commitment to heritage, education, craft, sustainability, and community. Through The King’s Foundation, this approach is reflected in work that supports thriving sustainable communities, protects traditional skills, and expands access to education and training in fields connected to heritage, the built environment, and the traditional arts.

For the English Chamber Orchestra, His Majesty’s patronage carries particular significance. His Majesty has been Patron of the ECO since 1977, and the Orchestra has performed at royal weddings, birthday celebrations, and other notable occasions, including the first concert ever to be broadcast from Buckingham Palace.

In 2024, the English Chamber Orchestra announced that confirmation had been received from Buckingham Palace that His Majesty King Charles III had retained his Patronage of the Orchestra following the review of Royal Patronages. The Orchestra also noted that members of the ECO were proud to have performed as part of the Coronation Orchestra.

In 2027, the English Chamber Orchestra will mark 50 years of patronage by His Majesty King Charles III. This exceptional milestone reflects continuity, cultural guardianship, and a shared commitment to the arts.

The Orchestra is deeply grateful for His Majesty’s enduring patronage and for the encouragement it continues to represent in support of musical excellence, education, and public benefit.

The relationship between His Majesty and the English Chamber Orchestra stands as more than a formal association. It represents an enduring alignment between artistic distinction, national heritage, public service, and the belief that music remains a living expression of human connection.

The English Chamber Orchestra Gala 2026 is held in this spirit. It will honour the Orchestra’s distinguished legacy while supporting its future through performance, education, outreach, community engagement, and the continued accessibility of world-class classical music for generations to come.

Attendance by His Majesty King Charles III at the English Chamber Orchestra Gala 2026 is subject to the royal schedule.
